Abyssal Archive features this illustration of Great Grey Wolf Sif.

Sif is the wolf companion of Artorias, the Abysswalker. Together they go on a quest to save Oolacile from the forces of the Abyss. But they lose the fight against Manus, Father of the Abyss. The dying Artorias uses his shield to erect a barrier around young Sif to protect them from the corruption of the Abyss.

The Chosen Undead later frees Sif from the protecting barrier and Sif helps them in the fight against Manus. Afterwards Sif becomes the guardian of Artorias’ grave in Darkroot Garden to prevent others from meeting the same fate as their former master. This is where they face off against the Chosen Undead in the boss fight.

Why isn’t the Sif figure wielding the sword?

You must have completed the Artorias of the Abyss DLC before the Sif boss fight.

When you save young Sif in Oolacile before fighting them as an adult, the cutscene changes. Sif sniffs at you, recognizes you and lets out a pained howl. Only then do they reluctantly pick up the sword starting the fight.
